• The Australia Greetings Card Market

So many people like to make their own cards as their hobby and many make them to sell as well. With so many people making their own you would have thought it would put a big dent in the greetings card industry but I think we all have a long way to go to do that.

I found some interesting facts and figures about the Australian greetings card market. It really is food for thought.

Australian Greeting Card Association Industry Synopsis

The Australian Greeting Card industry contributes a significant component to the Australian retail environment.
    Some interesting statistics:

Consumption Rate 22 cards per person per annum
Australia is third largest market per capita in the world

Retail Outlets Estimated at 27,000 plus

    Retail Market Shares:
    Newsagents 33%
    Discount Department Stores 16%
    Card & Gift shops 16%
    Supermarkets 12%
    Other Miscellaneous Outlets 5%
    Department Stores 7%
    Deep Discount Outlets 9%
    Australia Post 3%
(Note: This is best estimation on information available)

    Market Share

    Trends
Ink on paper communications continue to grow despite a significant increase in competition from new avenues of communication. Examples being electronic greetings, e-mail and SMS messaging. However, people still prefer the designs and sentiments (wording) of cards designed and made available from the professional resources of greeting card publishers. Although Australian consumers have a diverse range of tastes and preferences traditional designs and words are still very popular, although there is a trend toward less wordy cards.

Very interesting article Ian. $500 million. Wow, that is a lot of cards when you consider how many of us make their own cards or know someone who does. I am also surprised that newsagents still have the major share o the market when you can buy a reasonably nice card at the discount store for $1 or $2 as opposed to the newsagent where it would be more like $5 upwards. I would like to know who is buying my 22 per annum.

I was with one of my friends on Thursday doing a bit of shopping and she bought twp cards..........I was shocked, she used to make all her own cards, knows how many I make and yet still bought two. I think it is lack of time for her as well as other people. I'm going to make up a box for her and my sister of all different types of cards, so they have some in stock........then arrange for her to come over and make a whole heap herself. its not like I don't have enough card LOL (although, can you ever really ahve enough??) I know I haven't bought a card for years, except a handmade one from other cardmakers or at craft fairs.

These figures are huge, Even though I love to make cards I sometimes doubt my work and then go and buy a card at the last minute.Shocking for a crafter I know.
