Default Threads being marked as read, but I have not read them ;-(

I logged in yesterday to read some threads and a PM, but did not get to read all of the threads in the 'what's new' section.

I came back later in the day to read the rest of the threads and they did not appear in the 'what's new' section, so I clicked 'Advanced Search' to kick up the latest threads and ALL of them had been marked as read (except one)

this has happened on several occasions and I am wondering what is happening?? Have I got something set wrong?

I'm not sure, Cathy, although I think that if you stay logged in, it does appear that if you log in and click whats new, then post or look at a topic and sty logged in for a while, the whats new does change as it assumes that you've seen the whats new and it's not new anymore. I'm pretty certain Ian will have a more logical explanation - he tends to look at things and think like the program

I've just done an advanced search on all threads and posts and it picks up all of them since yesterday, even if I have seen them, so that works okay for me, maybe it is your settings?

Thats what happens to me Cathy. If I click What's New....the computer just assumes you have read them all (in that list). I then do a search for the past 24 hours if I think I didn't get time to read them all.

well it shouldn't assume - it should be clever enough to work it out which threads I have read it seems to make the assumption that when I have visited just to see if there are any recent posts, when I leave, I have read them all, or that when clicking on the 'what's new' I am only interested in what has happened since my last visit - why can't the 'what's new' display all threads for the last 2 days (or whatever timeframe) whether I have read them or not? Not everyone can visit every day and not everyone can read all the threads on one visit

this has been a constant source of frustration for me in this forum - this and the hit and miss of email notifications of replies to threads - if it was not for the wonderful people here, I think I would have left long ago

I think you are confusing a computerised program with a human being Cathy, they don't tend to have brains, they can't mind read and they use logic based on how they are programmed - don't you just wish they worked more like us women?

The VBulletin software is pretty standard for forums, I don't know what the problem is with the hit and miss notifications, I never get any, mainly because I tick no to all notifications, I figure there is enough crap going into my in box as it is. So, I can't comment on that, does anyone else get notifications and are they hit and miss for them?

Also, do you tick that you wish to subscribe to threads? When I go into subscribed threads it shows them as all un ticked ie I don't get any notifications. I wonder if that is the problem, you've had the same email address so it should know that.

Ian reckons you might need to check your spam settings on the inbox too. There are so many controls on the back end of this system not only for us running the forum but for the users too, I reckon they just need a bit of playing with to get them right.

I'd check under settings to see what email address you are using, check the subscribed threads and see which ones you are subscribed to and tick or un tick as necessary.

yes, I have checked my subscription settings - default setting is 'instantly via email'
